Frequently Asked Questions
What hardness range do tablets typically need?
Typical QC acceptance criteria for standard compressed tablets are around 50–200 N (about 5–20 kp), but specifications are formulation-specific. Large, bilayer and modified-release tablets can need 350 N or more, so choose a tester with margin.
How do N, kp and kgf relate?
1 kp = 1 kgf = 9.807 N, so 100 N is about 10.2 kp. YPD hardness testers display results in N or kg.
Does USP specify a hardness test?
USP <1217> describes how tablet breaking force is measured; acceptance limits are set in each product specification. Ph. Eur. 2.9.8 covers the same test. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia has no hardness apparatus chapter.
Which YPD model should I choose?
YPD-200C measures 10–200 N. YPD-350N measures 10–350 N plus diameter 2–25 mm, with user management and audit trail; 500 N and 700 N versions are available. YPD-350N-TK, in development, adds thickness and width.
