Franz Diffusion Cell Apparatus (Transdermal Diffusion Testers)

A Franz diffusion cell (Franz cell) is a vertical cell in which a membrane sits between a donor chamber and a receptor chamber; it is the apparatus behind in-vitro release and permeation tests on patches, creams and gels. The Huanghai RYJ-12B transdermal diffusion tester runs 12 wet-type vertical (Franz-type) diffusion cells in parallel, from room temperature to 45 °C (50 °C or higher on request), following the vertical diffusion cell methods of USP 1724 and USP 724.

The TPY-2 dual-method diffusion tester pairs 12 wet vertical cells with 6 dry horizontal cells for labs that need both cell types. Choose by cell type and temperature range. The model comparison, standards and FAQ are below the product grid.

How to choose a transdermal diffusion tester

A transdermal diffusion tester measures how an active ingredient is released from a patch, cream or gel and how it permeates a membrane: the in-vitro release and permeation tests used in topical and transdermal product development and QC. The RYJ-12B from Huanghai Pharmaceutical Instruments (Shanghai, since 1978) runs 12 wet-type vertical diffusion cells (Franz-type) in parallel, the apparatus described in USP <1724>.

How to choose

  • Replicates: release-rate comparisons usually use 6 cells per product, so 12 cells let you run test and reference products in the same run.
  • Temperature: skin-surface studies are commonly run at about 32 °C. The RYJ-12B covers room temperature to 45 °C, and the heating can be modified to reach 50 °C or more if your protocol needs it.
  • Dry-type horizontal cells as well: ask about the TPY-2 dual-method diffusion tester (12 wet vertical + 6 dry horizontal cells).
  • Records: test records can be exported over USB.

Pharmacopoeia and compliance

Vertical diffusion cell (Franz-type) methods per USP <1724>, together with USP <724>; ChP patch-release methods. Ph. Eur. 2.9.4 uses a dissolution-type apparatus rather than Franz cells.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Franz diffusion cell?
A vertical cell in which the membrane sits between a donor chamber above and a receptor chamber below. The receptor medium is stirred at a controlled temperature and sampled over time to measure release or permeation.

Which standards apply?
USP <1724> vertical diffusion cell methods for semisolid products and USP <724>, plus ChP patch-release methods.

How many cells does the RYJ-12B have?
12 wet-type vertical diffusion cells, run in parallel.

What temperature range does it cover?
Room temperature to 45 °C as standard. The heating module can be modified to reach 50 °C or more on request.

What stirring speed and temperature control do the Franz diffusion cells offer?
The Huanghai RYJ-12B gives you steady receptor conditions across all 12 cells in one run: stirring from 100 to 800 RPM and temperature control from room temperature to 45 °C within ±0.3 °C. When a protocol needs more heat, the heating module can be modified to reach 50 °C or higher.

What receptor volume and diffusion area does each cell have?
Each cell of the Huanghai RYJ-12B is a modified vertical Franz cell with an 8 ml receptor and a diffusion area of about 2.2 cm². Because the receptor is small, draw small aliquots and replace them with fresh, pre-warmed medium so the volume stays at the mark; runs of up to 9,999 minutes cover multi-day release profiles.

What equipment do I need to set up a transdermal patch development lab?
You need a way to make small patch batches and a way to measure release or permeation, and Huanghai supplies both: the MJ150-RD coating line for coating, drying and rewinding the patch layer, and the RYJ-12B diffusion tester for release and permeation studies.
