TABLET FRIABILITY INSTRUMENTS

Tablet Friability Testers

Friability testing measures a tablet's resistance to abrasion and breakage during handling, coating, and transport — a required quality control check under USP <1216>. Our CJY series Friability Testers are engineered for this standard.

Key Features

  • Adjustable rotation speed for standard and custom test protocols
  • Touchscreen interface with visual result observation
  • Patent-backed drum and chassis design (CN utility model, friability tester family)

Applications

  • Tablet durability and coating-integrity QC
  • In-process and release testing for oral solid dosage forms

How to choose a tablet friability tester

Huanghai Pharmaceutical Instruments (Shanghai, since 1978) makes the CJY-300E dual-drum tablet friability tester for USP <1216>, ChP 0923 and Ph. Eur. 2.9.7. Its drums have a 286 mm inside diameter and 39 mm depth, within the USP range of 283–291 mm and 36–40 mm, and speed is adjustable from 20 to 100 RPM with count and timer modes. The SY-6DN 4-in-1 tester also includes one friability drum.

Model comparison

Model Drums Speed and modes Drum size Best for
CJY-300E 2 20–100 RPM; count mode 1–1,000 revolutions; timer mode Inside diameter 286 mm, depth 39 mm Dedicated friability testing; two samples at once
SY-6DN 1 20–100 RPM, default 25 RPM / 100 revolutions Inside diameter ≈287 mm, depth 38 mm Labs that also need dissolution, disintegration and hardness

How to choose

  • Standard USP <1216> test: 100 revolutions at 25 ± 1 RPM (4 minutes). For tablets of unit weight up to 650 mg, take a sample as close as possible to 6.5 g; above 650 mg, take 10 whole tablets.
  • Acceptance: a maximum mean weight loss of not more than 1.0% is considered acceptable for most products.
  • Two drums let you run two samples or two products at the same time.
  • Friability is calculated by weighing before and after the test on a precision balance. CJY-300E deliberately keeps weighing separate from the vibrating drum, because vibration can disturb a precision balance.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablets are used for a friability test?
Under USP <1216>, for tablets with a unit weight of 650 mg or less, use a sample as close as possible to 6.5 g; for tablets over 650 mg, use 10 whole tablets.

What speed and how many revolutions?
25 ± 1 RPM for 100 revolutions, which takes 4 minutes. CJY-300E runs 20–100 RPM and 1–1,000 revolutions, or a preset time.

What is the acceptance limit?
A maximum mean weight loss of not more than 1.0% is acceptable for most products. If cracked, cleaved or broken tablets are present after tumbling, the sample fails.

How do I calculate friability?
Friability (%) = (initial weight − final weight) / initial weight × 100. You can use the free friability calculator on this site.

Why two drums?
Two drums let you test two samples in parallel, for example two batches or a product and a reference.
