A tablet hardness tester reports a number in Newtons. Whether that number is correct depends entirely on when the instrument was last calibrated, and with what. A load cell drifts over time, a probe's zero point shifts, and a reading that looks perfectly normal can quietly be a few percent off — which matters when hardness is the specification standing between a batch and a deviation report.
Most labs know they need to calibrate. Fewer have thought through what a complete calibration actually requires, or why a generic set of weights from a hardware store doesn't satisfy an auditor asking to see traceability documentation.
What Calibration Actually Verifies
A hardness tester makes two kinds of measurement, and each needs its own verification path:
Force measurement — the load cell that converts mechanical crushing force into a Newton reading needs periodic verification against a known reference force. This is what a certified calibration weight is for: not a "close enough" weight, but one issued with a third-party calibration certificate that states its actual mass against a traceable standard.
Fixture and mounting integrity — the weight has to be applied through a stable platform, and the load cell itself has to be mounted the same way every time. A dedicated weight tray/platform and a load cell mounting fixture exist because "hold the weight roughly where the tablet would sit" introduces exactly the kind of measurement variability that calibration is supposed to eliminate.
Dimensional accuracy (on models that also report tablet diameter — the YPD-350N, YPD-500N, and YPD-700N) — this is a separate measurement path from force, and needs its own reference: a certified gauge block set to verify the diameter-measurement mechanism independently of the hardness reading.

Who This Matters For
This isn't a universal requirement for every lab. A development lab running exploratory formulation work, where hardness data feeds internal decisions rather than a regulatory submission, may reasonably defer a full third-party-certified kit.
It becomes non-optional the moment hardness data needs to survive external scrutiny: a customer audit, an FDA/EMA inspection, or a distributor's own quality agreement requiring documented instrument traceability. At that point, "we calibrate periodically" isn't sufficient — the question is "show me the certificate," and a generic uncertified weight doesn't answer it.

It's an optional accessory, not a requirement to operate the instrument. It becomes necessary specifically when your quality system needs documented, third-party-traceable calibration records — for example, ahead of a customer or regulatory audit.
Can I use a standard laboratory weight instead of the kit's calibration weight?
A standard weight can verify that the instrument is roughly in range, but it won't come with the third-party ILAC-MRA/CNAS-accredited calibration certificate that auditors look for. The kit's value is the certificate chain, not just having a weight on hand.
Does this kit also calibrate diameter measurement, or only hardness force?
