Most dissolution tester procurement checklists cover the same core items: USP apparatus type, channel count, auto-sampling, data integrity and audit trail. Those are the right things to check — but they assume every product going through the instrument is going to be tested the same way, in the same clear-glass vessel, for the life of the instrument. That assumption holds until it doesn't.


Why Vessel Material Compatibility Belongs on the Checklist

A lab's product pipeline changes over time — a new formulation, a new client in a CRO setting, a new therapeutic area — and it's common for a photosensitive API to enter the pipeline well after the dissolution tester was already purchased and qualified. At that point, the question isn't "which apparatus type do we need" (already answered by the existing method) — it's "can this instrument's vessel be changed to protect the sample from light, or do we need an entirely different unit."

Instruments that ship with only one vessel material option turn that into a capital-purchase decision instead of a configuration change. Checking vessel-material flexibility at the time of initial purchase — even if there's no photosensitive product in the pipeline yet — avoids that problem later.


The Checklist

  1. Does your product pipeline include, or is it likely to eventually include, a photosensitive API? If your lab does contract testing, formulation R&D, or supports multiple therapeutic areas, treat this as "eventually yes" rather than "not currently."
  2. Can the instrument's vessel material be changed without replacing the whole unit? Ask specifically — some dissolution testers are sold with clear glass as the only available vessel option.
  3. If it can be changed, are the amber/alternate vessel's dimensions identical to the standard vessel? Any change in vessel geometry means re-qualifying the hydrodynamic profile against your validated method — a vessel swap that keeps dimensions identical avoids that.
  4. Is vessel-material flexibility available across the instrument's full model range, not just one channel-count tier? A lab that later needs to scale from 6 to 12 channels shouldn't lose vessel-material flexibility in the process.
