A tablet hardness tester has essentially one thing to calibrate: force. A dissolution tester has to get four independent physical parameters right at once — rotation speed, vessel/basket geometry, temperature, and the vertical alignment of every stirring element — and each one is a separate potential source of a failed dissolution profile that has nothing to do with the tablet formulation.

The Four Things That Have to Be Independently Verified

Temperature. Dissolution media temperature (typically 37°C ± 0.5°C) affects both the dissolution rate itself and, secondarily, media viscosity. A digital thermometer verifies the bath/vessel temperature independently of the instrument's own sensor reading.
Vessel and shaft geometry. This is the parameter most labs underestimate. USP <711> and the associated Apparatus 1/2 mechanical qualification specify tolerances for vessel centering, shaft wobble, and vertical alignment. A kit built for this covers it from several angles at once: a 300mm digital caliper for vessel/shaft dimensional checks, a dial indicator with mounting bracket for shaft wobble and vertical runout, a digital inclinometer to verify the assembly isn't tilted off true vertical, and a set of vessel centering plates (typically supplied in pairs) that physically verify each vessel sits on-axis rather than eccentrically.
Height and mounting stability. A universal magnetic stand and round disc magnetic base position the dial indicator repeatably at the correct measurement point run after run, and a height-setting ball (commonly a 25mm reference sphere) verifies the basket/paddle-to-vessel-bottom distance — another USP <711>-specified tolerance that silently drifts if never checked.
Why This Is Sold as One Set, Not Individual Pieces
Because the four parameters above are independent, verifying only one or two of them (rotation speed and temperature, say, while skipping vessel centering and height) leaves real failure modes unchecked. A dissolution tester that spins at exactly the right RPM in exactly the right temperature bath can still produce a non-compliant profile if a vessel is off-center by a few millimeters.
